Special Olympics has become a place to make life-long friends.
Day one of the Special Olympics Summer Games is in the books.
The Summer Games, taking place on Iowa State's campus May 25-27, began Thursday morning with cycling.
Strekal has been in charge of the cycling competition for 20 years.
"It’s really awesome to see [the athletes] support each other, win or lose, because that’s what Special Olympics is about,” Lauren Wernau said.
ISU football coach Matt Campbell chose Iowa State because of the fans. Last weekend, he and his football team, were able to give back to the fans and the community.

The Special Olympics began as a dream of giving children and adults with disabilities the chance to prove that having a disability doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be able to compete.
