A member of the Iowa State Swimming and Diving team competes against West Virginia University on Jan. 26 in the 1000 Freestyle.

The Iowa State Cyclones (7-3) continued their push toward the Big 12 Championship Friday as the swimming and diving team was hosted by the Kansas Jayhawks (6-1). The dual meet is split into two days and the Cyclones, despite their strong form recently, fell short on day one as Kansas took the meet with a score of 98-32.

The first event of the meet saw the Cyclones taking third place in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:44.30. Two members of the Cyclones relay team, freshmnn Emily Haan and sophomore Martha Haas, went on to secure third place finishes in the 100 back and 100 breast. Haan finished the 100 back with a time of 57.03 as Hass finished the 100 breast at 1:04.60.

Senior captain Haley Ruegemer recorded her fastest 1,000-free time this season clocking in at 10:21.70, earning her fourth place in the event.

Freshman Lucia Rizzo earned first place in the 200 fly with a time of 2:03.67, earning the Cyclones some needed points back. Rizzo’s time was just within a second of her PR for the 200 fly as the Cyclones headed into the last two events of the meet, the 1-meter dive and the 50 free.

Junior Dana Liva took second in the 1-meter with a final score of 259.20 and Senior Sydney Ronald claimed third with a score of 254.63. Freshman Jessica Coffin also participated in the 1-meter finishing with a new PR score of 199.13. To conclude the meet, Junior Anna Andersen tied for third in the 50 free with a time of 24.15.

The Kansas Jayhawks put together a great performance on day one of two of the dual meet nearly taking every event of the night. While it is evident that the Jayhawks got off to a rolling start, the Cyclones should not be ruled out as the team is on win streak of four closing the season before the Big 12 Championship.
