ISU golf club vies for national title

David Stein fires a shot. The ISU men’s golf club is headed to the National Collegiate Club Golf Association national championship.

After day one at the National Invitational Tournament, the golfers only got to play the first round. The Cyclones are off to a roaring start in Tucson, Arizona. With a fourth place finish after the first round, Iowa State is in good shape heading into tomorrow.

Shooting a score of 281 so far, Iowa State is surrounded by nationally ranked teams on the team leaderboard. The Cyclones lead Colorado State University by one stroke, but trail UNLV, Arizona State and Arizona by at least nine strokes.

Denzel Ieremia has his name back on the leaderboard today. The redshirt senior shot a 70, and ended with nine under par to finish the first day. Sophomore Tripp Kinney is now tied in the 10th spot with a score of 66 that makes seven shots under par. Lachlan Barker is right up there too tied in the 29th position with two strokes under par.

By the end of day one, Iowa State has made huge strides from last tournament just one week ago. Three golfers have shot under par on the first day and are within striking distance headed into the second and final day tomorrow.

Because of the suspension of the second round due to darkness, round two will resume tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. and the third and final round will pick up following the second round.
