First and second place finishers sophomore Larkin Chapman and junior Erinn Stenman-Fahey smile on the podium after their wins in the Women's 1000 M Final at the Big 12 Track and Field Championship at Lied Rec. Center on Feb. 24.

The first day of the Cardinal Classic in Palo Alto, California, saw the Iowa State women’s track and field team accomplish a familiar feat.

For the second time in two meet days, the Cyclone women had three of four entries score a new personal record in an event and all four earned top-five finishes in the process.  This time around, however, it was the runners instead of the throwers earning the accolades.

The first results involving Iowa State didn’t come in until after 9:30 p.m. central time, but Larkin Chapman and Erinn Stenman-Fahey’s performances proved to be worth the wait as the two finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 800-meter run.

Chapman’s run of 2:06.57 gave her a new personal record in the 800, and was just .46 seconds off of first place finisher Elise Cranny of Stanford.

Roughly an hour later, the Cyclones secured a win and a top-three finish from their two entries in the 5,000-meter run. Cailie Logue, making her collegiate 5,000-meter run debut, won section two decisively with a time of 16:04.32, which was three seconds better than the next closest competitor.

Then freshman Amanda Vestri runs in the second heat go the Women's 3000 M Final at the Big 12 Track and Field Championship at Lied Rec. Center on Feb. 24, 2018. Vestri finished the NCAA Championships in 14th place which earned her Second Team All-American status.

The run for Logue placed her at seventh all-time in Iowa State history for the event. Just under 10 seconds behind her with a time of 16:14.19 was Amanda Vestri, who scored third place in the heat with her performance. The two both set new personal records with their respective runs, with Vestri besting her previous time by eight seconds.

The rest of the Cyclone women’s entries will be in action on Saturday throughout the day. All entries at the Michael Johnson Invite in Waco, Texas will compete tomorrow, with the first event starting at 9 a.m. Meanwhile, the runners at the Cardinal Classic will start at 6:44 p.m.
