LETTER: Community loses treasure with death of Jean Hempstead
|
At his birthday party last August, Jean Hempstead was asked what the best thing was about turning 103 years old. Jean responded with his usual lighthearted quick wit: "No peer pressure."
Although most all his contemporaries had long since passed away, Jean's birthday parties always drew large crowds of friends, especially from Kiwanis, Iowa State University's Department of Industrial Engineering, Northcrest Community, United Church of Christ-Congregational, Youth & Shelter Services and many other non-profits. He was a true community treasure with a loveable personality and great sense of humor.
Jean's passing last Friday is a loss to the entire community. His steadfast support of YSS and other human service agencies is legendary. This being National Volunteer Week underscores the value of outstanding volunteers such as Jean. He especially loved working with children and youth and was often the first to raise his hand at the Ames Noon Kiwanis Club whenever someone needed assistance.
Jean was a blessing to each and every one of us who have had the privilege of knowing him. May we all continue to be inspired by Jean's example and joyful spirit of service to others.
