LETTER: Do your research, Mr. Frederick

Once again Ryan Frederick has opened his rhetorical mouth and shoved his foot, shin and part of his thigh into it. Regarding Monday's column concerning the PETA initiative to find an alternative to slaughterhouse practices, Mr. Frederick once again displays a startling ignorance of the subject matter and an inanity that has long since crossed the border of shameful. The PETA initiative, Mr. Frederick, is not limited to stem-cell research - in fact, the only goal is the production of synthetic protein, not synthetic animals, a goal that is not only somewhat feasible but realistic. Furthermore, stem cells do not need to be extracted via slaughtering animals - believe it or not, it is possible to harvest certain stem cells from live adult creatures without killing them.

Your counter-argument - that humanity is the dominant sentient being on Earth and therefore has and should retain free rein to kill and eat as they please - has the logical flaw that it assumes that the past must, by inherent necessity, continue into the future.

Lastly, your attacks on the character of PETA members (the vast majority of them not the psychotic extremists you paint them to be) and sympathizers are so sadly pathetic that they inevitably reflect more on your own character than those you are attacking. Are you yourself a farmer, Mr. Frederick? Are you yourself qualified to "speak to the state and condition of America's farms and packing plants?" Are you qualified "to speak on matters of animal husbandry?" Do you in fact have any expertise yourself in this area beyond making snap judgments and sloppy rhetoric? What explains your continued, profoundly insipid attacks on anything that does not conform to your expectations? I think you yourself gave the answer that:

"The answer, quite possibly, lies - as it often does - with ignorance, lack of education, lack of experience and paranoia."

Thus far, Mr. Frederick, that is the first item of substance I have read from you. Sadly, it does not quite apply the way you wanted it to.
