City recovers from flooding; water may still be a danger

The fierce weather that has rocked Ames for the past week temporarily subsided over last weekend, giving the city a chance to repair and take stock. The city was able bring power to most of Ames by Friday night and to clear streets by Saturday afternoon. Workers did not have to deal with major damage to structures and roads. (0) comments

Jane Elliott, internationally known teacher, lecturer and diversity trainer, challenged the racist, sexist, ageist, ethnocentric and homophobic attitudes of a large group gathered in the Sun Room of the Memorial Union on Thursday night. She spoke about her experiences with the well-known "Blue Eyes/Brown Eyes" experiment she initiated at Riceville Community School as a third-grade teacher the day after Martin Luther King Jr. (0) comments

A northern high-pressure weather system paired up with a southern warm front created the snow that fell in Ames and central Iowa on Thursday. Just a day after some students could be seen trekking across campus without their traditional winter gear, temperatures dropped from Wednesday's high of nearly 60 degrees to the mid-30s. GSB senators have approved additional salaries and wages for members within their own organization. Wednesday's GSB Senate meeting ran into early Thursday morning as regular allocations requests from student organizations were voted on. Police departments from Ames, Boone and Marshalltown are conducting ongoing investigations regarding a rash of false 911 calls about robberies at three McDonald's restaurants Wednesday. The first call was placed at 11:45 a.m. to the Ames Police Department concerning "masked men with guns" robbing the west Ames McDonald's, 3621 Lincoln Way, said Ames Police Cmdr. (0) comments

A change in the application process for the Veishea executive board will likely have an impact on the 2009 celebration. Instead of having applicants wait until the fall to apply for the Veishea executive board, applications will become available April 4. The general co-chairpersons will also be chosen during this time, as it is every year. (0) comments

Ames, ISU Police kick off Veishea safety campaign

Ames and ISU Police are getting into the Veishea spirit with five new T-shirt designs that will tell partygoers how to stay safe and have a good time. The T-shirts, which feature the return of the mascot Frank the Flamingo, will encourage revelers to use CyRide instead of drinking and driving, avoid littering, keep parties under control, use restrooms instead of urinating in public and avoid underage drinking. The Inter-Residence Hall Association will be awarding $7,500 worth of scholarships to 10 ISU students. IRHA is currently sponsoring a scholarship program for students who live in the residence halls and have made a difference in their communities. In total, there will be 10 scholarships awarded in the amount of $750 each. (0) comments

The Iowa Public Interest Research Group released a study Thursday that shows that students across the nation are targeted with marketing tactics by credit card companies. "We're not saying that credit cards are inherently evil. There will be students that need them," said Kathleen Cogan, campus organizer for Iowa PIRG. (0) comments

A former ISU faculty member discussed the history of Iowa State at the 2008 Faculty Spring Conference. The conference kicked off Thursday night at the Gateway Hotel and Conference Center, 2100 Green Hills Drive, with events starting at 7 p.m. Hors d'oeuvres and a lavish poster exhibit reflecting the theme of the conference, "Enhancing Research Excellence at ISU," greeted faculty and students.
