City recovers from flooding; water may still be a danger

The fierce weather that has rocked Ames for the past week temporarily subsided over last weekend, giving the city a chance to repair and take stock. The city was able bring power to most of Ames by Friday night and to clear streets by Saturday afternoon. Workers did not have to deal with major damage to structures and roads. (0) comments

ITS considers new e-mail possibilities

Iowa State's Information Technology Services is currently looking into ways to ditch WebMail and pick up a new e-mail system. James Davis, ITS vice provost and chief information officer, said the organization has been researching and evaluating different options for e-mail systems for quite a while. (6) comments

ISU and Ames Police dispatchers took part in a nearly 40-minute 911 call with ISU students Laura Johnson and Rachel Wall the morning of March 16. Johnson, freshman in psychology and resident of Willow Hall, called 911 and said she observed a gunman on the sixth floor of the building. (1) comment

ISU President Gregory Geoffroy approved the proposed recreation renovations and will ask the Iowa Board of Regents for permission to proceed with the final phase of approval. After campuswide voting came back in favor of the proposed renovation project, the board will decide during its April 30 session whether or not to approve the planning and programming phase of the proposal. In a split decision, the Iowa State Daily Publication Board selected the new editor in chief for the summer semester and upcoming fall and spring semesters. Chris Conetzkey, managing editor of the Daily and junior in journalism and mass communication, was named editor in chief of the Iowa State Daily effective fall 2008. (0) comments

Iowa Student Loan, a nonprofit group that helps students obtain loans for college, will soon stop offering private loans. "This is really in reaction to the economy's recent situation, the subprime market in particular," said Jack Wilkie, media spokesperson for Iowa Student Loan. (1) comment

Counselors at Iowa State's Student Counseling Services work diligently to meet the needs of the student body, despite being understaffed. Marty Martinez, staff psychologist and outreach coordinator for Student Counseling Services, said SCS has been trying new ways to combat is problem of understaffing. (0) comments

Lecturer elucidates threat of AIDS

Education and awareness are the most efficient antidotes to HIV, AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases - incurable health issues that exist in the world. The Student Union Board sponsored an AIDS awareness event Wednesday night in the South Ballroom of the Memorial Union which included a presentation by Katie Noynaert, disease prevention education prevention education coordinator for the American Red Cross central Iowa chapter. March 25 (reported at 4:51 p.m.) Michael Darling, 22, 2919 Oakland Drive, was arrested and charged with probation revocation. (reported at 6:30 p.m.) Lee Barrett, 26, 129 Kingsbury Ave #1, was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance (marijuana). (0) comments
