City recovers from flooding; water may still be a danger

The fierce weather that has rocked Ames for the past week temporarily subsided over last weekend, giving the city a chance to repair and take stock. The city was able bring power to most of Ames by Friday night and to clear streets by Saturday afternoon. Workers did not have to deal with major damage to structures and roads. (0) comments

Iowa State's Dance Marathon was celebrated with its usual festivities Saturday, and the evening finished with the revelation of more than $190,000 raised for the Children's Miracle Network and the University of Iowa Children's Hospital. At midnight, when the total amount of money raised was announced - after 15 straight hours of dancing, games, and loud music - the entire Durham Great Hall erupted into ecstatic whoops and applause. A medical disturbance occurred during Dance Marathon on Saturday night, but neither student volunteers nor representatives of the University of Iowa Children's Hospital released details, citing the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. Forty-eight teams of Iowa high school students filled Howe and Hoover halls on Saturday to participate in the 18th annual Regional Science Bowl. Starting at 8 a.m., the five-person teams battled each other in academic challenges that covered topics ranging from earth science to physics and math. (0) comments

Jan. 2 (reported at 4:59 p.m.) Dominick Lynem, 38, no address given, was arrested and charged with public intoxication and on a warrant for probation violation. (reported at 7:08 p.m.) Thomas James Tucker, 47, of Carlisle, was arrested and charged with driving while barred, driving while revoked, no insurance, operating while intoxicated (third offense), open container and registration.
