Another major ISU sports milestone was reached in the last week as well. Cyclone Hockey coach Al Murdoch recorded his 900th and 901st wins Saturday against Central Oklahoma on Iowa State's home ice.

While hockey isn't a varsity sport at Iowa State, Murdoch's legacy in the sport is far-reaching. He was a founding member and first president of the American Collegiate Hockey Association, the league Iowa State competes in. The ACHA's Division 1 national championship trophy, the Murdoch Cup, was named in honor of the ISU coach.

Murdoch's legacy wasn't just in the league's founding - his 901 wins put him second on the all-time win list, fewer than two dozen behind Michigan State coach Ron Mason, whose team competes in the NCAA.

A school's athletic prowess is too often determined by its high-visibility sports - football and basketball in particular. At Iowa State, where smaller sports have been having the most success the past few years - volleyball, gymnastics, wrestling, women's basketball - it's great to see a club-level sport playing at a varsity level, and it's even better when the figure that heads the program can be recognized for his success.
