On Nov. 19, the Business Cafe in the Gerdin Business Building will close to undergo a seven-week renovation.

The project is the latest undertaking for ISU Dining, since the opening of Seasons Marketplace in the Maple-Willow-Larch commons this fall. The reopening is scheduled for Jan. 11.

“It was something that couldn’t be worked in this summer. It’s actually a seven-week update, but we will only interrupt service four of those weeks,” said Brittney Rutherford, communications specialist with the department of residence.

Upon reopening, the café will offer a wider variety of coffee choices, along with a cold case of refrigerated foods, like those found in the C-Stores or the Hub.

“Basically, we only serve flavor-infused coffees. With this [renovation], we are going to be able to serve our full line of espressos, bring it Jet Tea, smoothies, frappes — anything you see at the MU café,” Rutherford said.

A majority of the changes will be structural to allow for the increased beverage selection.

“There’s a lot of things that go along with the espresso’s storage refrigeration. We’re expanding a little bit to the west,” Rutherford said.

News of the closure has been well received among students, anticipating the improved dining area.

“It is about time they put a full-service cafe on that side of campus. Right now, the closest cafe is the MU, which is too overcrowded,” said Tom Bakke, junior in sociology. “The Business cafe has always been a great spot to hang out, study or just meet friends, and I think it will be nice to have more options when you are there.”

Along with the Business Cafe, ISU Dining is currently completing the renovation to the Oak-Elm dining center. The center, after closing for year, is scheduled to re-open for the fall 2010 semester. Major changes for the center focus on an improved layout.

“Food will be served in one area and have a coffee house atmosphere in the dining center,” Rutherford said.

The renovations are just part of ISU Dining’s mission to enhance students’ experience on campus. Rutherford said the projects are scheduled to minimize impact on students.

The new Business Cafe will implement most of its changes over winter break and open, fully revamped, by the start of second semester.
