The Recreation Renovations project is moving forward.

At the Board of Regents meeting Monday, the regents approved the project program statement and $52.8 million finance plan.

John Schmitz, president of the Graduate and Professional Student Senate and graduate student in food science and human nutrition; Tom Hill, vice president for student affairs; Warren Madden, vice president for business and finance, and Daniel Fischer, president of the Government of the Student Body and senior in agricultural business.

Fischer said there had been a number of measures taken to make sure students have a voice in how they want this project to proceed.

“Throughout the summer and the beginning of the school year, there’s been many open forums and town hall meetings for students to voice what their needs and wants are,” he said.

Half of the renovations planning committee is made up of students.

“The student involvement’s been key,” Schmitz said.

Schmitz said all comments, both for and against the proposed plan, have been looked at while going forward with the project.

“We think this is a fiscally responsible program. The students have been heavily involved,” Madden said.

After visiting some different campuses, Madden said the proposed renovations will meet the needs of students.

“I don’t think these would be considered to be a Cadillac kind of facility. They are very functional but they will really meet the needs of our students,” he said.
