LETTER: Veishea wristbands foolish idea

Published: Wednesday, March 5, 2008 2:00 AM CST
I graduated from Iowa State last spring and have always intended to come back for Veishea this year. I've been looking forward to the opportunity to spend some time with friends who are still in the Ames area, watch the parade, eat a cherry pie and all of the other fun things that go along with Veishea, including perhaps watching some live music in the evening.

About the live music: Why in the world did the Veishea committee decide to not only charge admission to the musical events, but also place such a small limit on the number of tickets available? If more than a quarter of the student body decides they might want to go see the bands, I won't have that option even if I did feel like spending the $7 that a wristband will cost by the time I get to town.

If, on the other hand, there is little interest in the wristbands, then there will be 20,000-plus students and plenty of out-of-town visitors looking for something else to do that night. It doesn't take a degree in history to remember what happened the last time most of the student body stayed off campus doing their own thing on Veishea weekend.
